Topic 7: FishingQuestion: Do you like fishing?Answer: I have actually never been fishing. I never went when I was a child because I was raised as a vegetarian. I"m not a vegetarian anymore, but I still care a lot about animal welfare, and so the idea of taking a fish and getting a big hook in its mouth and then hitting it on the head and killing it makes me feel a little bit queasy. I know that it"s a natural part of life, but I don"t think of that as something fun and relaxing the way that other people do.Question: Did you ever go fishing when you were a child?Answer: Well, no. As I mentioned, I was raised as a vegetarian, so my family didn"t do that kind of thing. But I know that some of my friends did go fishing, and the dad of one of my best friends would take part in fishing competitions, so him and his friends would see who could catch the most fish. So I know that my friends definitely went fishing, but I personally didn"t go when I was a child.Question: Is fishing popular in your country?Answer: It is pretty popular, yeah. I think it"s not as popular as, say, 50 years ago, because now there are more hobbies that people can pursue and a lot more variety in the different activities that we can do. But people still enjoy fishing as a hobby, and of course, fishing can also be a profession. People can be professional fishermen. So yes, I"d say it"s still pretty popular in my country.Question: Do you like eating fish?Answer: For me, it depends on the type of fish. I don"t like fish that has a very strong fishy smell. For example, smoked mackerel—I find it just too strong. But I like white fish, and in general, I like fish that doesn"t taste like fish.
