Topic 9: Roads and StreetsQuestion: Are the roads and streets in the area where you live busy?Answer: Well, the road that I live on is a cul-de-sac, which means that it only goesone way and it ends—it"s a dead-end street, and there are only eight houses on it. So that road is not very busy. But we live about two streets away from a main road, a main arterial road that goes into the heart of Manchester, and that road is very busy. It"s a dual carriageway, so it has two lanes on each side, and even in the middle of the night, there are still cars going up and down that road. So the exact road that I live on, not so much, but there are busy roads nearby.Question: How do people cross the road in the city where you live?Answer: Well, it depends on the road, really. For example, on that big arterial road, you really have to wait for the traffic light and be very careful because the cars are coming quite fast and they"re not expecting you to step out into the road. However, on my road that I live on, a very quiet road, you can just walk across. You have to make sure you look both ways, but 99 times out of a hundred, there"ll be nothing coming because it"s such a quiet road. So it depends on which road we"re talking about.Question: What is the condition of the roads in your city like?Answer: I think most of the time the condition is pretty good because the local government, the Manchester government, is putting a lot of effort into improving the road quality. In particular, they"re investing in filling in the potholes, which are the small holes in the road, and those are very dangerous. If you"re driving your car quite fast and your wheel goes down into the pothole, it can damage the car. So that"s a very important thing that they"re doing. If we looked five years ago, you could say that the condition then was significantly worse than it is now. So things have improved a lot.Question: Are there any famous roads or streets in your country?Answer: Yeah, very much so, and particularly in London. Downing Street is probably the most famous street—that"s the street where the prime minister lives. The prime minister lives at 10 Downing Street, and the chancellor, who"s in charge of the economy, usually lives at 11 Downing Street. So that is a very, very famous street. Unfortunately, it"s not open to the public because it would be a security risk, but you can still go and visit the entrance to Downing Street if you go on a tour of London.编辑:Moon▼IDE英创教育
