Topic 12: A place to liveQuestion: Describe the ideal place where you would like to live.Answer: I think that there are actually two ideal places where I"d like to live. One of them is for Monday to Thursday or Monday to Friday, and the other one is the weekend. I like the idea of a combination of, during the week, living in a nice apartment in the city centre. It doesn"t matter which city, but a city centre that has lots of restaurants nearby, the feeling of life, the feeling of things happening, lots of events, lots of people to meet, and it would also be somewhere good to work. So that would be my ideal place to stay in terms of location during the week. But then at the weekend, I would love to have a hideaway house somewhere in the countryside where I could escape from the city. So that place should be in a very quiet neighbourhood, it should be close to nature. It ideally would be a nice big house, maybe with a swimming pool, although that one is optional. But it would be somewhere where it would be the opposite feeling, the opposite experience of living downtown—very relaxing, very quiet, full of green spaces. In terms of the special features that it would have, I think that the downtown apartment would just be very comfortable, very modern, have a nice kitchen, but it wouldn"t be anything absolutely crazy. But the weekend house should have a home cinema, hopefully a swimming pool, maybe a home gym, and a lot of other things as well. Both the apartment and the house would be quite big, and these would be ideal because they would give me the balance of a lot of excitement and different activities to do during the week, but a nice, relaxing place to live at the weekendQuestion: Why do some people choose to live in the city centre?Answer: Well, I think this is similar to what I"ve just talked about. It"s that feeling of being in the centre of the action. So you want to live in a place where there"s lots of choices of restaurants, there are movies to see, there are perhaps stage shows that you can go and watch, there are lots of people to meet, everything is happening, so you"ve got lots of different options and you don"t get bored. And if you want to hang out with your friends, they"re just in a very convenient distance away from you. So I think that is probably the biggest reason why people would want to live in the city centre.Question: What do you think buildings will be like in the future?Answer: I think one of the big changes that will happen is that buildings will become more environmentally friendly, and in particular, they"ll have better insulation. In countries like the UK, we have a relatively cold winter and people use their heating a lot, but a lot of that heat escapes through the roof or through the walls or through the windows, and that"s due to poor insulation. And of course, that means that then you have to keep heating your house and keep heating it, and that uses more energy and then that can cause an increase in emissions and then that"s climate change. So if we improve insulation, that retains the heat more in houses and in apartments, and then you don"t have to use as much electricity or as much heating, and then your overall carbon footprint will be reduced. So that"s one of the changes that I can see coming.Question: Why are apartments popular in some places while not in other places?Answer: I think it depends really on what you grew up with. For example, in the UK, we think of apartments as being places where young people live in their twenties and maybe their early thirties before they have the money to pay for a full house. Whereas people in other countries would see apartments as the place that they would live forever. For example, in Colombia and in China, my experience was that people would get a nice apartment, but still an apartment, and that would be their forever home. So I think it depends really on the culture in which you grew up.编辑:Moon李▼IDE英创教育
