Topic 10: An Old Friend You Lost Touch WithQuestion: Describe an old friend you had lost touch with and got in contact with again.Answer: So this is an interesting question, and I actually have an example of this, a story that happened quite recently. So I had a friend in university who was called Alex, and we lived next door to each other in the first year of university, and so we knew each other very well. We didn"t have the same major, but we would go for lunch together and we would have dinner together, and we spent a lot of time together. We used to play poker together, so we did a lot of different activities. And even after we finished university, we still stayed in contact. He moved to London, and I moved to China. But whenever I came back to England, I would always go and visit him in London. Unfortunately, then he moved to Australia, which is even harder to get to. And he stayed in Australia for many years, six or seven years, I think. And that"s the point at which I lost touch with him because he was coming back to England so infrequently that it was very hard to meet up. And we both got a little bit lazy with sending each other messages. But I recently found out that he is moving back to the UK. So he"s due to move back in the next few months. And so I reached out to him on Facebook, and I said congratulations on your new job. And I told him I was very excited about him coming back to England. And we had a conversation, and it was just like old times, so it was very nice. So that is the friend that I lost touch with and got in contact with again.Question: Is it better to have a lot of friends or just a few friends?Answer: Well, I think that depends on what type of person you are. If you"re someone who really values having those very deep relationships, I think it"s more likely to have those deep relationships with just a few people. But if you"re someone who loves having different contacts, knowing lots of different people, then in that case, a lot of friends is clearly the better choice. I think in an ideal world, we"d have somewhere in the middle. We"d have a reasonable amount of very close friends, but that"s quite a hard thing to manage because you have to maintain those relationships. People move, people change. So if I had to choose one, I"d probably say just a few very close friends.Question: Why do old friends lose touch with each other?Answer: Well, there"s a lot of reasons. One, of course, is if you move to a different city or to a different country, then of course there are ways of still contacting each other through social media and through chatting channels and all kinds of different things. But it"s not the same as being in the same city, living close to someone, being able to see them face to face. So that"s definitely one reason why people might lose touch. Another reason is that people change as they grow older. So the people you were friends with when you were eight might be very different from the people you want to spend time with when you"re 28 or 38 or 48. So I think people changing is another big factor.Question: Would having just a few friends limit your horizons?Answer: Well, that"s a very interesting question. I think it depends on who the friends are. Because if those friends are all exactly the same as you and have all of the same opinions and all of the same life experience and have lived in the same place as you for their whole lives, then, yes, I think probably that would be a little bit limiting because you wouldn"t have any variety of opinion. But if you have a lot of variety in the people that you spend time with, even if those are only a few people, for example, you might have different ages, different genders, different ethnic backgrounds, different linguistic backgrounds, and many other differences as well, then it could only be four or five friends, but you would cover a lot of different perspectives, and in that case, I don"t think having only a few friends would limit your horizons.编辑:Moon李▼IDE英创教育
