比如:“His promises turned out to be a lot of hot air.”(他的承诺到头来只是一句空话);“I"d come to the conclusion by then that he was all hot air.”(到那时我早看清了,他就是空话连篇)。
比如尤娜那状态:“Una is such a hot mess she probably doesn"t know what she"s doing there herself.”(她自己都摸不清自己在干嘛)。
比如性别议题:“Gender issues have become something of a hot button.”(早变成大家避不开的敏感点了)。
比如比赛:“The competition is really hotting up now.”(现在都白热化了)。
比如棒球:“She"s really hot stuff at baseball.”(她可是实打实的棒球高手)。
be in hot water——惹麻烦、陷困境。比如移民言论:“He found himself in hot water over his comments about immigration.”(这话说完就给自己找事儿了)。
hot under the collar——要么窘得慌,要么气得慌。比如我暗示他错了:“When I suggested he was mistaken he got rather hot under the collar.”(他当场就急眼了)。
比如某人:“He was always putting on airs and graces.”(天天端着个架子)。
be walking/floating on air——开心到飘起来。比如遇到马克后:“Ever since she met Mark, she"s been walking on air.”(天天笑得上蹿下跳)。
in the air——能感觉到要发生什么。比如:“Love/Change/Spring is in the air.”(爱意、变革、春意都在空气里飘着)。
up in the air——悬着没定论。比如项目:“The whole future of the project is still up in the air.”(这项目前途还没谱呢)。
be on/off (the) air——正在播/停播。比如电台:“The radio station is on air from 6 a.m.”(早6点就开始播音了)。
比如生完孩子:“After the delivery of her baby, she was walking on air.”(兴奋得睡不着觉)。
nose in the air——目中无人。比如路过我:“She walked past me with her nose in the air.”(头都不低一下,跟没看见我似的)。
out of thin air——凭空变出来。比如1万欧元:“I can"t come up with €10,000 out of thin air.”(我总不能从空气里掏出钱来吧)。
