One ubiquitous phenomenon today is that many children are obsessed with computer games, and therefore are less likely to engage in physical exercise. While various hypotheses have been proposed to explain the trend, I tend to see the problem as a corollary of their addiction to the digital environment; nevertheless, I am not optimistic about its ramification.

The primary culprit of children’s preoccupation with computer games is the widespread use of portable smart devices. Though there are some exceptions, the majority of youngsters today seem to marry themselves to digital gadgets - wherever they go, they opt to carry smartphones with them, which exposes them to the digital environment at almost all times. To complicate matters even more, a large number of smartphones and tablets are pre-installed with gaming software as a marketing gimmick aimed at the young demographic. Both factors deprive children’s leisure time – enticing them from playgrounds to the virtual world. 

While youngsters may argue in favor of video games with reasons such as games stimulating creativity or enhancing problem solving skills, it is difficult for me to see their leisure preference as anything other than a health threat. Long hours of exposure to digital settings exacerbates the sedentary lifestyle of the younger generation, which inevitably increases the tendency toward obesity among youngsters. Another detriment is the impact on their interpersonal skills. We should not forget that outdoor sport provides important opportunities for face-to-face communication and cooperation; unfortunately, this collective activity is gradually being encroached upon by virtual games that isolate young minds. 

I would conclude therefore, though children’s addiction to computer games is a concomitant consequence of the digital age, I would say it is imperative that more attention should be directed toward having children understand that importance of balance in leisure activities between sedentary and active pursuits.
