Gap years have become increasingly common among high school graduates today. From my perspective, taking a year off for travel or work can be recognized as both positive and negative in equal measure, depending on discrete need of individual student.   

From the positive perspective, taking a break from classroom learning provide youngsters with an alternative way to reinvigorate themselves and better prepare for future study. Students who take the opportunity to travel will gain a new and different understanding of the world, as they stretch, grow and see new things, whether these be poverty and hunger in impoverished countries, or the latest scientific achievement in world fairs. All these experiences are conducive to reflection on their future role in the world, helping them choose college majors from a more holistic perspective. The same is true for those choosing to work for a year, who may experience the hardship in the real business world, and therefore start their university careers with ambitions and pragmatic considerations.    

However, the benefits mentioned above are not universally applicable to all. One problem can be seen in students from less well-off families. A year-long vacation and travel will inevitably add to financial burden to them – from flights to housing to program fees and food, there are a lot of budget considerations to take into account during a gap year. In response to this, some might argue that a gap year for work can offset the apprehension about money. Unfortunately, I may point out that it might distract some students from returning to campus, particularly when they first taste the first excitement of earning money by working as sales or promotion, which does not require high qualifications or professional skills.   

It is my conclusion therefore, gap years can be deemed both advantageous and detrimental, students need to deliberate on their decisions at the great length.
