Swipe left or right to switch languages←左右滑动切换语言→Reading comprehension is a pivotal skill in interdisciplinary learning, bridging the knowledge gap across various disciplines. In mathematics, it aids us in accurately understanding problems and selecting appropriate methods for solving them. In scientific inquiry, it assists us in extracting information from literature, laying the foundation for experiments and analyses. In history studies, it enables us to gain insights into the causes and their impacts behind events. Reading serves as a key unlocking the doors of knowledge, allowing us to freely gain valuable experiences from various disciplines, and thus construct a comprehensive and solid knowledge system.
The importance of regular reading habits exceeds far beyond monotonous practices. There are loads of researching data revealing that:★Reading fosters critical and deep thinking capacity. Through extensive reading, students are exposed to a wide range of perspectives and ideas, enabling them to better analyze and evaluate information, ultimately forming their own opinions.★Reading for 15 minutes daily results in an additional exposure to 220,000 Words in a Year. This not only contributes to vocabulary accumulation but also enhances language proficiency.★Reading time is positively correlated with academic performance. Studies have shown that the longer students spend reading, the better their academic performance tends to be, indicating that reading has a positive impact on academic achievement.★Reading time is positively correlated with reading comprehension as well. Reading hones students" comprehension, analytical and other comprehensive skills, enabling them to better understand the content of texts.
As an IB international school, Chengdu Montpellier International School (MIS) not only offers library courses led by professional IB teachers to guide students in their reading, but also allocates reading time from 16:00 to 16:30 on Monday to Thursday, allowing students to immerse themselves in the world of books. Specifically, English reading is scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays, English mathematics on Tuesdays, and Chinese reading on Thursdays. At MIS, we are committed to creating a favorable ambience where students can immerse themselves in the world of books at any time and in any place. We possess a rich collection of books in English, Chinese, and French, covering a wide range of genres such as history, picture books, fairy tales, novels, science popularization readings, stories, and poetry. These books are thoughtfully arranged in various corners of the teaching areas, including classrooms, corridors, and lounges, allowing students to embark on their reading journeys at any moment with ease. This ubiquitous access to reading resources not only facilitates students" daily reading but also significantly stimulates their interest and enthusiasm for reading.More importantly, these books are not selected arbitrarily but rather through rigorous screening and careful recommendation by professional mentors and authoritative institutions. They choose the most valuable and engaging books based on students" age, cognitive level, and reading interests.
As exemplified by the winter vacation reading list we are sharing today, the Chinese book list is curated by Teacher Ajian, an independent children"s reading promoter and Chengdu Shuyu Public Welfare Lecturer with over a decade of experience in promoting children"s reading. She has compiled library booklists for hundreds of schools and kindergartens nationwide and conducted numerous reading training sessions for parents and teachers. The English book list, on the other hand, is sourced from a leading indicator in the field of English reading, "What Kids Are Reading 2024," the largest and most authoritative report on reading behavior among K-12 students in the United States. It is noteworthy that the Chinese book list is recommended based on grade levels. Furthermore, the English book lists for Grades 3 to 8 correspond to the differentiated English instruction at MIS, with a shared list for Grades 3 to 5 and another for Grades 6 to 8. Compared with the 20 books recommended for Grades 1 to 2, the number of recommended books for Grades 3 to 8 is more extensive, totaling 60 books. These books not only meet the reading needs of students but also assist them in acquiring knowledge, stimulating their thinking, and cultivating their sentiments through reading. By accessing these high-quality books, students can be exposed to diverse cultural backgrounds, ideologies, and fields of knowledge, thereby broadening their horizons, enriching their inner worlds, and fostering cross-cultural communicative competence and multidimensional thinking abilities.
Take English book list as an example:★For students in Grade 1, we recommend reading books such as Hi! Fly Guy and Green Eggs and Ham. These books not only cater to students" reading interests but also cultivate their language expression abilities and imagination in a relaxed and enjoyable reading process.★For students in Grade 2, we recommend reading books such as Charlotte"s Web and The Good Egg. These books, through lively and engaging stories, assist students in understanding important values such as friendship and kindness, while simultaneously enhancing their reading comprehension abilities.★For students in Grades 3 to 5, we recommend reading books such as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and The Story of Ruby Bridges. These books focus on themes such as growth and emotions, being either close to life or inspiring. They can guide children in thinking deeply about issues, cultivating abilities such as empathy, inclusiveness, and comparative analysis, while enhancing their reading appreciation and emotional cognition.★For students in Grades 6 to 8, we recommend reading books such as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. These books feature profound themes and rich connotations, showing the brilliance and resilience of human nature through fantastical or real-life stories. They can stimulate students" imagination, creativity, and critical thinking, guiding them to ponder over society, human nature, and the meaning of life. Additionally, these books enhance literary proficiency, moral judgment, and enrich knowledge of history and science.
Furthermore, we have prepared reading tools to facilitate more engaging and meaningful reading experiences for students. Each reading card features a task designed to enhance students" reading interest and abilities through diversified activities. These tasks encompass a wide range of areas, including book evaluation, vocabulary and grammar learning, text structure and content analysis, drawing and design, writing and creation, prediction and verification, information organization and summarization, question-asking and answering, role-playing and simulation, among others. They cover multiple aspects such as reading comprehension and analysis, creativity and expression, reading strategies and habit development, as well as interaction and communication. The reading challenge activity chart outlines a series of reading activities, with students coloring in the corresponding box upon completion of each task. Upon finishing all tasks, students will be rewarded. The activities are diverse in content, encompassing reading various types of materials (such as books, articles, and daily information), utilizing multiple reading formats (such as individual reading, interactive reading, creation, and sharing), and covering a wide range of themes (such as stories, knowledge, and life). Emphasis is placed on cultivating students" skills in vocabulary accumulation, reading comprehension and analysis, and the development of reading habits.
Herein, we sincerely hope that parents can create a warm and inspiring reading environment at home. To this end, MIS has curated a reading list specifically for parents, inviting them to engage in shared reading experiences with their children. Upon completing each book, we encourage parents to delve into in-depth discussions with their children, drawing upon their own reading experiences and life journeys. Such interactions not only broaden students" knowledge horizons but also foster communication and understanding between parents and children, strengthening their emotional bonds.Upon the return of students to school, we will also organize a captivating post-reading sharingevent, providing a platform for students to showcase themselves and express their feelings. During the event, students will have the opportunity to speak freely and share their reading insights and unique perspectives. This not only helps to hone their expressive abilities but also enhances their self-confidence, allowing them to gain growth and progress through sharing.
We extend our warmest wishes for a joyful winter vacation to all students! We hope that, with a curious and exploratory mindset, students will embark on a journey to uncover the treasures within books and experience the joy and power that reading brings.PS: We are delighted to announce that parents and students now have access to the recommended booklists in both English and Chinese for grades G1-G8.
Fly Guy》《Green Eggs and Ham》等书籍。这些书籍不仅能够满足学生的阅读兴趣,还能在轻松愉快的阅读过程中,培养他们的语言表达能力和想象力。★G2的学生,推荐阅读《Charlotte"s Web》《The Good Egg》等书籍。
