西安雅思写作培训班怎么样,By far, the most important aspect of‘developing an idea’, is the focus placed on connecting the ‘cause’ of something and its 'effect'. In fact, without thinking about 'causes and effects', it is nearly impossible to write a well-developed idea, not to mention a well-developed essay, and as a consequence, we must be familiar with these words and their use.

Therefore / Thus

Therefore: Shows a clear LOGICAL connection between cause (前半句) and the effect (后半句).

Thus: Shortened version of ‘therefore’

'Therefore' can start a sentence (if the sentence before it, is a ‘cause’), or can be placed in the middle of a sentence. Traditionally, if placed in the middle of a sentence, it will use asemi-colon (;) before it, however, it is acceptable and normal to place a comma (,) in front as well.

E.g. IELTS is a difficult exam. Therefore/Thus it is necessary to study a lot before taking it.

IELTS is a difficult exam; therefore/thus it is necessary to study a lot before taking it.

IELTS is a difficult exam, therefore/thus it is necessary to study a lot before taking it.

As a result / As a consequence

As a result or 'and as a result': shows what the 'result' is.

As a consequence or 'and as a consequence'

Because both of these conjunctive phrases use 'as' at the beginning, they can be used as a 'subordinate conjunctive phrase'(从属连词), and placed at the beginning of a sentence, BUT must be followed with 'of'. In other words, 'As a result OF' = 'because of'. Without 'of', it means 'so' or 'therefore'. They can also be used in the way 'therefore' is used at the beginning of a sentence, without using ‘of’ (meaning the sentence before it must be a cause).

E.g. As a result of a higher tax on fuel, more financial pressure will be put on citizens and business.

(Here, ‘as a result of’ is used as a从属连词)

E.g. In an effort to reduce traffic congestion, some governments have already greatly increased fuel taxes. As a result, traffic congestion has lessened to some degree.

When ‘as a result’is placed in the middle of a sentence to mean 结果, 因此 or 所以, place a comma and an 'and' before it or a semi-colon (;)

........, and as a result, .......

........; as a result, ........

E.g. Cross-border governmental collaboration means problems and solutions can be shared, and as a result, the costs of solving regional problems can also be shared.

Consequently / Subsequently

Consequently: This conjunction, along with 'as a result' can be safely used whenever you want to show an effect, result, or consequence of a cause. Traditionally, 'consequently' will come after a semi-colon (;), but by simply placing 'and' before it, you can put it after a comma (,).

E.g. Educating the public on the benefits of a healthy diet can help people to become more aware of the dangers of eating too much fast food, and consequently, young people in particular will at least know the difference between 'healthy food' and 'unhealthy food'.

Subsequently: Shows what happened 'next', and means 'following closely in time and order'. Though it closely resembles 'consequently', there is a slight difference, as 'subsequently' focuses more on the 'next' thing that happened. 'Subsequently' is an adverb, so often it is placed before a verb to show the next action that happened.

Eg. Many students choose to take a gap year between high school and university. The vast majority subsequently feels eager to return to their studies after taking such a long break.

To make a compound sentence with the above cause and effect conjunctions, you will need three aspects (clauses).

E.g. If government enacts a new tax on drivers (1:condition),car sales may be affected (2: possible result), and as a consequence, the economy could be adversely influenced (3: consequence or conclusion).

*NOTE: the first two clauses are part of the hypothetical (假设)'if' phrase, and it is ONLY after the hypothetical result is shown,'car sales may be affected', that we can use a cause and effect conjunction. We can NOT use a conjunction after the first comma, as the word 'if' is a subordinate conjunction (从属连词).
