Topic: An Important Decision You MadePart 3 (Discussion):Do you think children sometimes have to make important decisions?I think they do definitely as they get older. So I think teenagers will have to make decisions, important decisions, like which subjects are they going to study?And then, of course, things like, do they follow the peer pressure of their friends, or do they make their own decisions?I think younger kids generally don"t have too many big decisions to make because they"ll essentially just, most of the time, follow what their parents tell them they"re going to do.But yeah, as they get older, gradually parents will give kids a little bit more responsibility.Who can children turn to for help when making a decision?Well, I mean, the obvious choice would be their parents, but of course, kids don"t always want to ask their parents for advice, and sometimes they resent it if their parents give them advice.So there"s other family members—older brothers, older sisters, maybe cousins—and then their friends in school, perhaps teachers in school who they feel comfortable asking for advice.There"s a lot of people that they can turn to if they need help or they need advice. But yeah, I think probably parents is the one that they most often wouldn"t choose.How do people usually make important decisions?Well, I think this is an interesting psychological thing. I think most people would consider that they take their time and think rationally about important decisions, but from a neurological perspective, most of the time we make decisions based on our emotions, and then we retrofit some logic or some rationality onto that emotional decision that we"ve made.So we"re led by our emotions, and then we try to pretend that we"re being logical and rational. So I think most of the time we make decisions with our gut.
