Topic: An Important Conversation You Had RecentlyPart 3 (Discussion):Do you think modern technology helps people communicate more effectively?Well, I think that depends on your definition of effective.I think it helps people to communicate more effectively and quicker across large distances. So, for example, if I"m in the UK and my brother is in Germany, previously we would have to send a letter to each other. That would take a long time, be very inconvenient. Now we can instantly send a voice message, we can have a video call. And so, in that sense, technology has helped us to communicate more quickly and more effectivelyBut I do also think that technology acts as a huge distraction when you"re in the same room as someone because we"ve all seen that very classic image of friends sitting around a table, but they"re all looking at their phone instead of talking to each other. So I think, in that sense, technology has actually harmed communication and made it less effective. So it depends on the circumstance, really. Why might some people find it hard to start a conversation with strangers?Well, I don"t think this is just some people. I think this is probably most people, and there"s probably a few reasons for it.The first one is what we call stranger danger. If it"s someone that you don"t know, you have no idea if that is a dangerous person, a very aggressive person, someone that might hit you in the face, or they might be very rude to you.So there"s a fear factor there. There"s also just the fact that when we meet people for the first time, due to our kind of genetic evolution, we"re looking for social cues.We have not settled into a comfortable pattern the way that we have with our family and with our old friends. So it"s a lot more tiring to talk to someone entirely new, to a stranger. So it could be dangerous. It definitely will be tiring. And I think that"s why people find it quite hard.
